PREMIER John Horgan on Tuesday issued the following statement in honour of Vaisakhi:
“People in B.C. and around the world are coming together to celebrate Vaisakhi, one of the holiest holidays in the Sikh faith.
“Sikhs recognize Vaisakhi as a celebration of the formation of the Khalsa more than 300 years ago.
“Vaisakhi would normally be celebrated through worship in Gurdwaras, lively gatherings and thoughtful religious processions that bring together friends and families. B.C. is home to one of the largest Sikh populations outside India, and I always look forward to joining in the many celebrations throughout our province.
“While this year once again requires us to stay apart to stay safe, there are better days ahead. Until then, reach out to your friends, family and neighbours. Take the time for a video chat or phone call with loved ones, participate in a ‘virtual Vaisakhi’ event or celebrate safely with your small group outdoors.
“These are challenging times, but the values of compassion and generosity at the core of the Sikh community will continue to be a source of strength.
“On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, to everyone who is celebrating: Happy Vaisakhi!
“Vaisakhi Diyan Lakh Lakh Vadhaiyan!”
