Safe Surrey Coalition delivers on key election promise with new east-west road connector

SAFE Surrey Coalition announced on Tuesday that it has fulfilled a key election promise by announcing the approval of a vital east-west road connector along 72 Avenue, spanning from 152 Street to 176 Street.

The new four-lane road connector represents a crucial step towards easing traffic flow within the city, addressing longstanding congestion issues that have impacted residents and commuters alike. Former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum expressed his commitment to fulfilling this promise, emphasizing its importance in accommodating Surrey’s rapid growth and evolving transportation needs.

“In delivering on this key election platform promise, we are taking decisive action to improve the quality of life for Surrey residents,” said McCallum. “The new 72 Avenue corridor will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also provide critical east-west connectivity across multiple neighborhoods such as Newton, Clayton Heights, Cloverdale, and Fleetwood, fostering greater accessibility and convenience for our community members.”

Councillor Mandeep Nagra said: “This infrastructure project represents a significant investment in Surrey’s future. By creating a continuous connection between Highway 91 and Highway 15, we are facilitating smoother traffic flow and enhancing connectivity and effectively reducing traffic congestion on highways and arterial routes such as Highway 10, 64 Avenue, and 88 Avenue.”

Councillor Doug Elford emphasized the importance of fulfilling election promises and delivering tangible results for Surrey residents. He said: “Promise made, promise kept. The construction of the new 72 Avenue corridor underscores our commitment to addressing traffic congestion and improving transportation infrastructure by providing a critical east-west road connector to support Surrey’s continued growth.”
