Safety tips for a fun and safe Halloween

THE City of Surrey and Surrey Fire Service want to remind everyone to keep safety top of mind this Halloween by following some simple safety precautions.

“This Halloween I encourage residents to take steps to ensure an enjoyable and safe evening for all,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “Stay on sidewalks, use crosswalks, dress in bright colours and be aware of fire risks. Surrey’s Bylaws and Fire personnel will be out on Halloween night responding to complaints and emergencies, but we must all do our part. I wish a safe and happy Halloween to all.”

  • Fireworks: Fireworks are hazardous to those who are lighting them, and to the surrounding area based on the fallout of the burning materials.  With the recent dry conditions, this risk is higher than in previous years.  In The City of Surrey, fireworks are not allowed to be sold or discharged without a valid Fire Department permit and Federal Fireworks Operator Certification. Violating the City’s Firework Bylaws can result in a penalty of up to $5,000. Click here to learn more.
  • Dangerous Décor: Ensure that combustible Halloween decorations such as paper, cornstalks, and dried flowers are kept well away from sources of heat, including light bulbs, candles, and heaters.
  • Smoke Alarms: This is a great time to make sure your smoke alarms are functional and up to date. More information can be found here: surrey.ca/HomeSafe.
  • Exits: Exits are not an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, ensure that nothing is blocking any escape routes.
  • Power Problems: Check indoor and outdoor decorative lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wire, or loose connections. Do not use damaged lights or overload extension cords.
  • Costume Considerations: When selecting this year’s Halloween costume, pick brightly coloured costumes that can be clearly seen by motorists and do not choose costumes with long flowing skirts, capes, or baggy sleeves as they can be hazardous around ignition sources.
  • Cross at the Corner: Be careful when crossing the street.  Ensure to cross the street at intersections, crosswalks, or street corners.  Never cross between parked cars.

MEANWHILE, Surrey RCMP encouraged people to discuss safety tips with their family members, especially kids, who are heading out to trick or treat such as:

  • Have a flash light with you;
  • Plan a route that includes well-lit streets, sidewalks and crosswalks;
  • Have the emergency contact information on you;
  • Avoid face mask that could obstruct your vision;
  • Leave any fake weaponry at home;
  • Wear reflective clothing so you can be seen;
  • Do not consume any treats unless they have been inspected by an adult first.
