Sexual assault charge against former Kelowna mayor Colin Basran stayed

THE BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) announced on Thursday that special prosecutor Brock Martland has directed a stay of proceedings of the single charge of sexual assault against Colin Basran, who was the mayor of Kelowna at the time of the alleged offence.

On October 13, 2022, Martland was appointed special prosecutor in relation to the investigation of the sexual assault alleged to have occurred in Kelowna in May 2022.

Martland made the decision to direct a stay of proceedings after receiving further information from counsel for the accused and police investigators. After receiving this information, he conducted a careful review of all the materials and information available and concluded that the charge assessment standard for proceeding with criminal charges could no longer be met.

BASRAN was elected Councillor in 2011 and in 2014, he was elected Mayor. He was re-elected Mayor in 2018, but lost in 2022.

Basran was born and raised in Kelowna. He graduated from KLO Secondary school after attending elementary and middle schools in the Rutland area. Basran worked as a television journalist for CHBC News before going into business as a realtor.

The Basrans were one of the very first South Asian families to settle in the Okanagan, arriving around 1907.
