THE BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) announced on Thursday that charges have been approved against a New Westminster Police Department officer following incidents that occurred in New Westminster on May 4 and 7, 2025. The matter was investigated by the Abbotsford Police Department.

An information charging Constable Hardeep Singh Purba with two counts of breach of trust was sworn on June 25 in New Westminster Provincial Court. The first appearance on this matter is scheduled for July 22.

As these matters are now before the court, the BCPS said it will not be releasing any additional information or commenting further at this time.

MEANWHILE, New Westminster Police issued a press release on the case “to provide some additional context.” It said that in May 2025 it became aware of allegations of misconduct committed by one of its officers. This information was immediately reported to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) and the officer was suspended from duty. The New Westminster Police Department also requested that the Abbotsford Police Department conduct an external criminal investigation. In August of 2025, the New Westminster Police Board amended the officer’s suspension to being without pay.

“Upon becoming aware of the allegations, we took immediate steps to ensure this officer was suspended from duty so he did not have further contact with the public,” said Chief Constable Paul Hyland. “These allegations absolutely do not represent the values, professionalism, or standards I expect of my staff, and I hope that this doesn’t overshadow the important work they do every day.”

As this matter is now before the courts, the NWPD said it will not be in a position to provide further comment.
