SURREY Police Service (SPS) said on Monday that it has notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) following a medical emergency suffered by an individual in its custody.
On Saturday, December 6 at approximately 9:30 p.m., a 64-year-old male was arrested at an incident involving an alleged assault. The man was transported to SPS cells and he was found unresponsive in the back of a SPS police vehicle upon arrival at SPS’s cells.
The man received medical attention from SPS officers, Surrey Fire Service firefighters, and BCEHS paramedics and was transported to hospital where he remains under medical care.
SPS informed the IIO shortly after the incident occurred and the IIO asserted jurisdiction. SPS said it is unable to provide additional information while the IIO’s independent process takes place.
