SUKHJEET Saggu, 20, of Surrey has been identified by the BC Coroners Service as the man who died after suffering an accidental fall while hiking at Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park on June 5 (Friday).
Saggu was reported missing on June 5 after becoming separated from a group he had been hiking with on the Linderman Lake Trail at Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park.
Chilliwack RCMP and Search and Rescue attended and began search operations. Saggu was subsequently located on June 6, at the foot of a loose rock incline, where he was confirmed deceased.
THE RCMP in a statement said that on June 5 at about 4:30 p.m., they received a report of a missing hiker at Lindeman Lake Trail. A witness told officers a 20-year-old Surrey man did not return to the designated rendezvous point.
Police supported by members of Chilliwack Search and Rescue, Integrated Police Dog Services, and the Enhanced Policing Unit initiated an extensive ground and air search of the area but were unable to find the man.
“Mountain terrain is treacherous in this area and the search had to be suspended once darkness fell” said Cpl. Mike Rail.
A Search and Rescue dog team and RCMP Air Services from Courtenay joined searchers when they resumed in the morning.
At approximately 2 p.m. the hiker, who had succumbed to his injuries, was found at the bottom of a steep cliff.
Foul play is not suspected.
BC Coroner Service and police continue to investigate the case.
“We remind everyone of the danger while enjoying the back country. Always remain with your group and be aware of your surroundings” said Rail.
