SURREY RCMP on Wednesday confirmed that Avtar Bal, 28, of Surrey was killed in a hit and run on Tuesday.

Police said that on September 26, at 7:20 a.m., they were called to the 14300-block of 92nd Avenue in Guildford.  A man had been found by a passerby on the road unconscious with head injuries.  No one had witnessed what led to the man’s injuries and it wasn’t readily apparent what had transpired or how long he had been injured. The man was taken to hospital where he later died.

A thorough examination of the scene was conducted by Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team with assistance from the Integrated Collision and Reconstruction Service (ICARS). Investigators located glass fragments and pieces of a vehicle suspected to have been involved. Officers are continuing to canvass the neighbourhood for potential witnesses and surveillance video.

On Tuesday, Bal’s cousin told CTV News that the victim was on his way to take a driving test for a truckers’ licence. He was headed to the bus stop.

Bal’s relatives told Global BC that he had come from India just a month ago on a work visa.

A neighbour, Mandeep Mundi, told Global BC that her husband saw the victim lying on the roadside and went over to help him. He was bleeding from his mouth and ears, but it seemed that he did not have any injury on his body. However, his shoes were laying at a distance from him and so there was speculation that he may have been hit by a vehicle.
