Surrey man with rifle arrested at Vancouver DTES social housing building

VANCOUVER Police arrested a man brandishing a rifle inside a Downtown Eastside social housing complex on Thursday morning.

Building staff called 9-1-1 shortly after midnight when the 29-year-old man, who doesn’t live in the building, allegedly walked in with a rifle and ammunition, then barricaded himself inside the staff-only office space.

Patrol officers and members of VPD’s Emergency Response Team responded immediately to the building, near East Hastings and Princess Avenue, and took the man into custody without incident. Nobody was hurt.

A suspect, a Surrey resident, was taken to jail and faces several firearms charges.
