Mayor Locke slams decision to release high-risk sex offender in Surrey

Brenda Locke

SURREY Mayor Brenda Locke on Friday criticized the decision to release a high-risk sex offender in Surrey.

Locke said in a statement: “A dangerous sex offender, with multiple convictions for horrific crimes involving women and children, is being released into our community. According to the public warning notification issued by the Surrey Police Service, Marinus Willemse “is believed to pose a significant risk to women and children.”

“When you consider the criminal history of Marinus Willemse, it seems almost inevitable that he will reoffend. If so, that means there will be a victim.

“While I agree with the principle of rehabilitation, forgiveness and second chances, I draw the line at repeat offenders that target the vulnerable.

“We need to do better.

“As I have in the past, I will write the Federal Minster of Justice expressing my firm believe that we cannot, as a society, allow such individuals amongst children, mothers and families.

“If this means that Marinus Willemse must remain in jail indefinitely – then so be it.”
