Surrey’s Canada Day and Fusion Festival win regional awards

2017 marked Canada’s 150th birthday and the 10th Anniversary of Fusion Festival

THE City of Surrey’s Canada Day was named British Columbia’s “Most Outstanding Public Event Over $200,000” and Surrey Fusion Festival named “Best Public Event / Fair / Festival” at the 1st Annual Canadian Regional Event Awards. The Canadian Event Industry Awards is the pinnacle mark of professional achievement in the Canadian event industry.

While both Canada Day and Fusion Festival celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017 with expanded Canada 150 zones featuring Canadian, French-Canadian and Indigenous programming, Fusion Festival also celebrated its 10thanniversary. Top-level headliners were booked for both events, with free performances offered by Nelly Furtado, Hedley, Magic!, Classified and Amrinder Gill during July. These factors ensured both events drew the largest crowd sizes in their respective histories, with 150,000 attendees attending each free event.

“2017 was a milestone year for Surrey Canada Day and Fusion Festival. We are honoured to receive recognition for these events from the Canadian Event Industry Awards,” said Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner. “We are excited for the 2018 festival season as we continue to offer a broad variety of rich cultural experiences to residents and visitors alike.”

Surrey Canada Day and Surrey Fusion Festival are both presented by Coast Capital Savings. Surrey Canada Day has grown to become one of the largest Canada Day celebrations in Western Canada and includes free concerts, family activities, amusement rides, a zip line and food trucks. Surrey Fusion Festival is the ultimate celebration of music, food and culture. In 2017, it grew to showcase 45 cultural pavilions and 150 performers across six stages at the two-day event.
