Third suspect charged in connection to April’s Columbia SkyTrain Station stabbing

NEW Westminster Police announced on Friday that Jorell Brertton of Delta has been charged with assault in connection to the stabbing at Columbia SkyTrain Station last April. He was arrested on June 28.

On the evening of April 10,New Westminster Police and Metro Vancouver Transit Police responded to a stabbing at Columbia SkyTrain Station. A man was stabbed and a woman was assaulted by a group of youths not known to them.

The New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit led the investigation with ongoing assistance from the Metro Vancouver Transit Police, NWPD Forensic Identification Unit, and NWPD Street Crime Unit. Together these teams collected evidence, canvassed for CCTV footage, and eventually identified suspects.

Earlier this month, two youth suspects were arrested and charges were approved relating to aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and robbery. The names of the youth cannot be released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“This arrest highlights our commitment to seeing those responsible brought to justice,” said Sgt Andrew Leaver. “The successful partnership between our Major Crime Unit and members of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police has now seen charges laid against all three suspects in this investigation.”

Brertton remains in custody on an unrelated matter. A youth suspect also remains in custody, while the second youth suspect was released with conditions. The investigation is still ongoing.
