DEREK Corrigan and the Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA) on Tuesday announced the City of Burnaby will deliver the highly anticipated twin arenas in South Burnaby by Byrne School, as part of its $400 million public amenities construction plan.
“After an active community consultation, the new south Burnaby arenas are ready to be constructed,” said BCA Mayor Derek Corrigan, who is running for re-election in this week’s
municipal election. “The new south Burnaby arenas will be a fantastic addition to the Edmonds area, next to Byrne Creek Secondary. The two new ice rinks will be South Burnaby’s first public arenas.”
“People in this neighbourhood are very aware of the new
Edmonds Community Centre that is exceptionally well used. The adjacent Edmonds Park recreation area is nearing completion. The new ice rinks will add another opportunity for young and old to enjoy their community,” said Sav Dhaliwal, BCA City Councillor, and lifetime member of the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association.
The south Burnaby arena will be located at 10th Avenue and 18th Street in South Burnaby, providing the community with:
● two NHL-sized ice sheets for ice sports,
● non-ice usage including dry-floor sports,
● design for significant public gatherings,
● spectator seating including a warm viewing area,
● change rooms, meeting room, skate shop and lobby.
The Burnaby Citizens Association public amenities construction plan is entirely funded by non-taxpayer dollars. Included alongside the new arenas are a replacement of the Burnaby Lake arena and a new 50-metre pool at CG Brown. Three new recreation centres were also announced on Monday as part of the Burnaby Citizens Association $400 million public amenities construction plan.
