Vancouver: Temporary change to green bin collection schedule for February

THE City of Vancouver announced on Monday that as a result of staffing shortages in sanitation services, there will be temporary changes to green bin collection schedules for the month of February. “Our employees have worked extensive overtime hours over the past two months to maintain service but the operational demand now exceeds the limit that we can safely cover through overtime,” the City said.

Starting January 31, green bins will be collected every two weeks (not every week), on residents’ regular garbage day. This schedule change is temporary and the City anticipates green bin service to resume to normal (i.e., weekly collection) at the end of February.

Residents can download the VanCollect app or visit vancouver.ca/collectionschedule for garbage and green bin collection schedules, notifications, and up-to-date service alerts.

An important consideration in this decision is that in winter, green bin volumes are much lower due to less yard waste and trimmings and colder temperatures help to reduce green bin odour, the City added.
