DR. Hakam Singh Bhullar’s book “The Underdog: A Veterinarian’s Fight Against Racism and Injustice” — the true story of a long battle against systemic racism in Canada’s veterinary profession — was officially recognized in the B.C. Legislature by Minister of Mines, Jagrup Brar, Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals, and B.C. Conservative MLA Steve Kooner on December 3.
Bhullar says: “For us, this was not just the recognition of a book—this was the acknowledgment of a 15-year struggle. A fight against systemic racism, injustice, and silence. A fight to protect dignity, truth, and the future of many others who stand alone against powerful institutions. This journey was extremely difficult. The pain, the isolation, and the discrimination we faced cut deep into our lives.
“No one should ever suffer in the hands of racism. No professional, no immigrant, and no family should ever be crushed because people in power choose bias over fairness. If my voice can help even one person escape that suffering, then this fight was worth every sacrifice.”
Bhullar thanked Speaker Raj Chouhan for welcoming him and his wife, Joti, and showing them the historic B.C. Legislative building, and arranging a lunch in their honour. Brar and MLA Amna Shah joined them.
Bhullar said: “Today, for the first time, I felt the walls of power echo the voice of an immigrant, a veterinarian, and a fighter for justice. This moment belongs not only to me—but to everyone who believes that truth can win, even when you stand alone. And it is a reminder that racism must be confronted, challenged, and defeated—so future generations can walk with dignity, not fear.”
