THIS summer, the City of Delta will begin essential upgrades and repairs at Sungod Recreation Centre that will affect facility users. 

The  initial phase of the project will involve repaving and amenity installation in the parking lot east of the Aquatics Centre. The new amenities will include additional accessible parking spaces, more electric vehicle chargers, and improved lighting. The parking lot is expected to be closed from June 24 until the end of August; however, parking will still be available in the large lot on the west side of the Arena

Other significant repairs taking place at Sungod Recreation Centre include upgrades to the roofing system of the Aquatic Centre, requiring its closure from August 12 through September 8. 

This necessary work coincides with the Aquatic Centre’s regularly scheduled annual maintenance shutdown, which includes the closure of the Gymnasium, Fitness Centre, and Customer Service Office from August 26-30.

“Sungod Recreation Centre is a major focal point in North Delta and has provided over 40 years of programming and service to the community. These necessary upgrades and repairs will greatly extend the lifespan of our busiest and most popular facility and ensure it continues to meet the needs of our city for years to come,” said Trent Reid, General Manager, Delta Parks Recreation and Culture, on Tuesday.

As a result of the facility closure, aquatics programming like swimming lessons and AquaFit classes will be temporarily cancelled. Other facilities in Delta, including North Delta Outdoor Pool, Ladner Outdoor Pool, Ladner Leisure Centre, and Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre will expand their program capacity to accommodate the disruption to service. 

North Delta Outdoor Pool will also extend its schedule and remain open until September 8. Facility drop-in schedules and links to program registration are available at Delta.ca/Aquatics.
