3 officers injured in apprehending suspect in dangerous driving incident

COQUITLAM RCMP are seeking witnesses and dash-cam video in a dangerous driving investigation.

Frontline officers responded to multiple reports of a white Ford Escape hitting parked vehicles at Lougheed Highway and Westwood Street in Coquitlam shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. As the vehicle travelled west along Lougheed Highway, witnesses reported that the vehicle drove on the sidewalk at Pinetree Way in Coquitlam, before leaving scene.

Police located and stopped the vehicle as it was travelling west on Atlantic Avenue near Johnson Street in Coquitlam and arrested the driver and sole occupant.

Three police officers sustained minor injuries while responding and apprehending the suspect. All three officers have since been released from hospital.

“This was a highly dynamic and fluid situation that required a significant police presence to the Coquitlam Centre parking lot near Johnson Street at Atlantic Avenue in Coquitlam,” said Media Relations Officer, Cpl. Alexa Hodgins. “We understand the public’s concern to this unfolding incident. Due to the time of day, this was a highly populated area and we are fortunate that no injuries were reported from the community.”

Victim Services is engaged.

“We are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or may have cell-phone or dash-cam video between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 along Lougheed Highway between Westwood Street and Johnson Street in Coquitlam, to contact our investigators,” said Hodgins..

Police have recommended charges to BC Prosecution Services.
