ON Friday, October 1, at approximately 8 p.m., the New Westminster Police Department was contacted after someone who had seen damage to a storage room door noticed a suspicious person inside the storage room.

As police arrived on scene they observed a man matching the suspect description running out of the front entrance to the condominium. The suspect was arrested for break-and-enter without incident.

A maintenance worker who was working in the building advised police that the suspect threatened him with a knife as he was running out of the building. Officers located a knife in nearby bushes.

“To address break-ins, managers of multi-family buildings are encouraged to reach out to our Crime Prevention Coordinator for a security audit as there are environmental design choices that can decrease the likelihood of criminal behaviour,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “In addition, residents are encouraged to call police when they see criminal behaviour inside their buildings.”

Charges related to break-and-enter and assault with a weapon are being recommended. The New Westminster Police Department would like to encourage anyone with information on property crimes to contact 604-525-5411. Report crimes in progress to 9-1-1.
