25-per-cent tariffs on Canada, Mexico waived until April 2 (updates)

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed executive actions that delay for nearly one month tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada that are covered by the USMCA free trade treaty.

CNN said the executive actions follow a discussion Trump held on Thursday with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and negotiations between Canadian and Trump administration officials.

Trump posted on Truth Social: “After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement. This Agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!”

Earlier, he posted: “Believe it or not, despite the terrible job he’s done for Canada, I think that Justin Trudeau is using the Tariff problem, which he has largely caused, in order to run again for Prime Minister. So much fun to watch!”

Trump seems to remain ignorant about Canadian politics and is apparently shaken up by the fierce resistance he’s encountered from Canada.

MEANWHILE, Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc later announced on X: “The United States has agreed to suspend tariffs on CUSMA-compliant exports from Canada until April 2nd.  As a result, Canada will not proceed with the second wave of tariffs on $125B of U.S. products until April 2nd, while we continue to work for the removal of all tariffs.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters earlier on Thursday: “That aligns with some of the conversations that we have been having with administration officials, but I’m going to wait for an official agreement to talk about a Canadian response and look at the details of it. It is a promising sign, but I will highlight that it means that the tariffs remain in place, and therefore our response will remain in place.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated bluntly on X:” The only thing that’s certain today is more uncertainty. A pause on some tariffs means nothing. Until President Trump removes the threat of tariffs for good, we will be relentless.”
