ON Sunday, June 28, as the final whistle blew on Team Canada’s 1-0 victory over South Africa in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, celebrations erupted across the province. The historic win sends Canada into the Round of 16 for the first time, marking another milestone in a tournament that has captured the heart of the country.
Across British Columbia, MLAs joined thousands of fans in cheering on the national team. Whether attending community watch parties in cities and towns throughout the province, or gathering at home with family, friends, and neighbours to celebrate the team, Canadians were reunited once again for an historic moment.
Stephen Eustáquio’s winning goal was another unforgettable moment in Canada’s World Cup journey. It showed the heart, talent, and determination of this team, and gave Canadians from coast to coast another reason to celebrate. The return of captain Alphonso Davies also provided an emotional boost for the team and its supporters.
Behind every great team is exceptional leadership, and Canadians owe tremendous gratitude to Head Coach Jesse Marsch and his coaching staff. Their belief in Canadian talent, commitment to excellence, and fearless approach have helped transform Canada’s men’s national team into one capable of competing with the world’s best. Following the historic victory, Marsch called his players “Canadian heroes,” recognizing not only their achievements on the pitch but the pride, hope, and inspiration they have brought to communities across the country.

Hosting the FIFA World Cup has already proven to be a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Canada and British Columbia. Beyond the matches themselves, the tournament has strengthened communities, celebrated our diversity, and created moments that transcend sport.
“Congratulations to Team Canada. Thank you to Coach Jesse Marsch, Stephen Eustáquio, Alphonso Davies, and every player who has represented our country with courage and heart,” said MLA Ravi Kahlon.
“You have given Canadians a moment that will be remembered for generations and reminded us all what can be achieved when a nation comes together behind a common goal,” proudly shared MLA Amna Shah.
