DELTA Mayor George Harvie’s Achieving for Delta team of council and school trustee candidates on Thursday revealed their Parks Capital Plan, focused around six key investments in Delta’s parks and recreation infrastructure.

“We believe Delta’s young athletes – and all residents – deserve to practice and play on world-class facilities,” said Harvie. “Investing in our sports and recreation facilities in Delta is an investment in our youth and helps to keep our community healthy and active. An Achieving for Delta majority on council and school board would work together to advance significant projects across all of Delta.”

If elected, the Achieving for Delta council and school trustee teams are committed to working together to rebuild the Winskill Aquatic Centre, resurface the tracks at Seaquam Secondary School and Delta Secondary School, install a second synthetic turf field at Mackie Park, put a cover over the outdoor pool at the North Delta Recreation Centre, and advance the Cromie Park Master Plan, including the new indoor training facility in partnership with Ladner Minor Baseball Association.

In addition, the Achieving for Delta team will implement Delta’s Cycling Master Plan, invest in pedestrian connections, and build additional fenced dog parks in local neighbourhoods across Delta.

These campaign promises build on Achieving for Delta’s previous success on following through with their 2018 commitment to deliver significant upgrades to Delta’s sports and recreation facilities.

In this term, Harvie and the Achieving for Delta team have helped secure millions of dollars in federal and provincial grants for Delta projects, including over $5.8 million for the North Delta Secondary School track replacement, and $1 million to upgrade the outdoor Ladner lacrosse box into a covered, serviced, multi-sport facility.

“The North Delta track is an example of what happens when we work together to advocate for a healthy and active Delta,” said Achieving for Delta council candidate Jessie Dosanjh. “As a Delta school trustee and high-performance athletics coach, I experienced George’s leadership as he brought together all levels of government, our school board and community, and partners to deliver the North Delta Track replacement, which is so important for our community to stay healthy and active.”
Other investments have included turf field replacements at Winskill, Mackie and Holly parks (with upgrades on the way to North Delta Community Park and Dugald Morrison), the track resurfacing at South Delta Secondary School, new and upgraded pickleball and tennis courts across Delta, Delta’s first ever cricket pitch at Delview Park, a new, fully fenced dog park at Mackie Park, new beach volleyball courts at Delta Secondary School, new cycling lanes across Delta, and more.

Over the next six weeks, Harvie’s Achieving for Delta team is set to lay out a comprehensive platform that will focus on investing in a healthy and active Delta, keeping Delta safe, delivering high-value investments while keeping taxes low, working to keep generations together in Delta, building a fair and inclusive community and taking real action on climate change and protecting our farmland.
The Achieving for Delta council candidate team includes incumbent councillors Alicia Guichon and Dylan Kruger, incumbent school board trustees Daniel Boisvert and Jessie Dosanjh, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Rod Binder, and local business leader Jennifer Johal.
The Achieving for Delta school trustee candidate team includes incumbent Board Chair Val Windsor, incumbent School Board Trustee Erica Beard, Sher-E-Punjab Radio host Nimmi Daula, clinical counsellor and research scientist Dr. Ammen Dhillon, community advocate Masako Gooch, chartered director Maury Kask, and architect and former Delta District PAC chair Joe Muego.
The municipal election will be held on October 15.
