Arthavan Rehnu-Vasanthakumar, 26, charged in Toronto’s Jewellery Exchange robbery

TORONTO Police say they have arrested man in the January 8 robbery at Jewellery Exchange, 1920 Eglinton Avenue East, by an armed man.

It is alleged that a man, armed with a handgun and wearing a mask and gloves, parked a vehicle across from the premises and then entered the jewellery store and confronted two employees at the display counter at 1:50 p.m.

He threatened both employees, pointed the firearm at their heads, and made demands for jewellery.

An armed uniformed security guard was in attendance and saw the suspect’s actions, He confronted the man and discharged his firearm at him several times. The man was hit and he dropped his loaded firearm and fled to his vehicle.

He was located by officers who administered first aid, He was then taken by ambulance to hospital.

Arthavan Rehnu-Vasanthakumar, 26, of Scarborough, has been charged with armed robbery, use disguise with intent, two counts of fail to comply with recognizance, two counts of point firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, careless storage of a firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of an indictable offence.
