BRUCE Ralston, NDP spokesperson for immigration and multiculturalism, released the following statement in celebration of Pakistan Day:

ON behalf of John Horgan, Leader of the British Columbia New Democrat caucus, I would like to extend my best wishes to all those celebrating Pakistan Day.

Pakistan Day commemorates the Lahore Resolution, a major step in the journey towards Pakistan’s independence in 1947. It is also known as Republic Day, as the country’s first constitution was adopted on March. 23, 1956.

Pakistan Independence Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the contributions that the Pakistani community in British Columbia have made to this province’s rich and diverse heritage.

Across the country, Canadians of Pakistani descent will be celebrating the day with family and friends, and with other communities. It is a time for all of us to acknowledge the valuable relationship the people of Pakistan have with Canada.

On behalf of the B.C. New Democrat caucus, we extend our warm wishes for a very happy and festive Pakistan Day, and a prosperous future, to all Pakistani – Canadians.
