THE BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says the temptation to drive too fast on the Sea to Sky Highway must be curbed as one of their motorcycles intercepted another car that may have been moments from causing a tragedy.
On July 17, just before 11 p.m., a BCHP BMW R1200 motorcycle was working the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway #99) near Lions Bay and stopped a 21-year-old driver from Burnaby when his blue BMW M3 coupe was clocked doing 194 km/h in an 80 zone.
The driver received:
- A ticket for excessive speed (more than 60 km/h) with a fine of $483 under section 148(1) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act;
- A seven-day impound;
- The bill for the tow, the impound and any subsequent ICBC licencing and insurance penalties.
“There have been a high number of fatalities in recent weeks on BC highways, and too much speed is almost always a factor,” says Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BCHP. “Our officers would much rather give you a ticket, tow and impound rather than have to tell your family that you’re not coming home.”
