BURNABY North-Seymour MP Terry Beech was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday
This is a new role for the three-term Burnaby North-Seymour MP and his fifth Parliamentary Secretary assignment.
Adding this position to Beech’s portfolio is an opportunity to take a leadership role to tackle the rising cost of living, to take action on housing affordability and child care. “We will rebuild an economy that continues to create jobs, further reduce our unemployment rate, and shrink the debt-to-GDP ratio,” said
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Finance has played a critical role in our government’s plan to support Canadians, businesses, and industries that have been hardest hit. As we emerge from the pandemic, Beech said he is looking forward to working closely with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland to ensure Canada is positioned for a strong recovery and long-term economic success.
“Since we first took office, our government has been focused on improving affordability and the cost of living. Prior to the pandemic, our government brought both the unemployment rate and poverty rate in Canada to their lowest levels in history. As we continue our recovery from COVID-19 I look forward to working alongside the Honourable Chrystia Freeland as we build upon our position of fiscal strength and continue to shape an economy that works for all Canadians,” he added.
Beech previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and to the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages (B.C.), Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, and Parliamentary Secretary for Science.
Beech is an accomplished and experienced entrepreneur, educator, and advocate. He entered public service over 15 years ago when he was elected as a city councillor. He was named one of Maclean’s Top 30 Under 30 in 2004, one of Business in Vancouver’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2013, and was also selected as an Action Canada Fellow.
As an adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, Beech was co-author of The In-Credibility Factor, which highlights his desire for Canada to become a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. He founded HiretheWorld.com, and was a co-founder of Twinbro, a non-profit organization that has helped over 25,000 students obtain millions of dollars in scholarships and financial aid.
While serving as a city councillor, Beech began his studies in public administration at Capilano University, where he was named one of the school’s “Alumni to Watch.” He holds a Bachelor’s degree with a joint major in Business and Economics from Simon Fraser University, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Oxford.
He is currently raising his family in Burnaby North—Seymour with his wife.
