Coquitlam RCMP seek additional witnesses and videos in connection to Canada Day incident

COQUITLAM RCMP are seeking additional witnesses and videos of an incident that occurred on Saturday, July 1 at 9 p.m. during a live performance hosted for Canada Day at Town Centre Park located at 1299 Pinetree Way in Coquitlam.

The Coquitlam RCMP Investigational Support Team (IST) is investigating what caused a standalone light fixture to fall on spectators during the live performance which resulted in a woman being taken to hospital. The victim suffered significant but non-life-threatening injuries. The light fixture was located at the top of the bleachers facing the main stage.

Police are seeking additional information to determine if the incident involved any criminal intent.

“This event was well attended by thousands of people who may have seen the light fixture before it fell on spectators sitting in the bleachers of the nighttime performance,” said Cpl. Alexa Hodgins, Media Relations Officer. “We are asking the public to review their photographs or videos taken between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2023, around the bleachers as the light fixture may be visible in the background.”
