Coquitlam RCMP warn about resurgence of distraction thefts

COQUITLAM RCMP are warning residents about a recent resurgence of distraction thefts in the community.

Recently, two similar incidents have been reported in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam. In both cases, victims were approached by a group of individuals who engaged them in conversation before stealing their jewelry.

  • Incident 1: A victim working in their yard was approached by a group offering a necklace and ring. While placing the necklace on the victim, the suspect stole the victim’s own necklace.
  • Incident 2: A victim walking on the street was asked for directions by a group in a vehicle. As the victim approached, one suspect distracted them by grabbing their arm while another switched the victim’s gold necklace with a fake one.

Common suspect profile:

  • Driving an out-of-province vehicle, often rented.
  • Overtly friendly and personable.
  • Traveling with family members, including children.
  • Attempting to sell or give away gold or jewelry at a low price.
  • Sharing emotional stories to gain sympathy (e.g., claiming they need money to feed their family).
  • Trying to get physically close (e.g., putting jewelry on you instead of handing it over).

How to stay safe:

  • Do not allow strangers to touch you or enter your personal space.
  • Stay alert, even during routine activities like walking.
  • Don’t hesitate to say “no” or call for help if you feel uncomfortable.
  • Walk away from suspicious individuals and report the incident to police immediately.

“These suspects rely on distraction and prey on victims’ compassion to commit their crimes,” said Acting Sgt. George Han, Coquitlam RCMP Media Relations Officer. “If something feels off, trust your instincts and keep your distance.”

Coquitlam RCMP encourage all victims of fraud or theft to come forward and report these incidents to their local police.
