COUNTDOWN ON TO 2013 SURREY INTERNATIONAL WORLD MUSIC MARATHON

Runners of all ages and abilities are preparing for the 2013 Surrey International World Music Marathon, presented by Central City, as the 2nd annual event is just around the corner on Sunday, September 29, 2013.

An event that’s built for everyone, from committed marathoners to novice runners, the Surrey World Music Marathon is proud to include events for every age and fitness level. Offering a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, Prospera Credit Union Relay, Mayors 5K Run and the Century Group Kids Fun Run, this day is all about fun and fitness with unique themed “cultural miles” featuring world music, dancing, and festivities to encourage runners along the route.

2013 will see a change in the route from the inaugural event in 2012, with the Full and Half Marathons winding their way through the spectacular scenery of Surrey’s majestic Green Timbers Urban Forest. Participants and local residents are encouraged to check out the new route online and to familiarize themselves with the temporary road closures that will be in effect that day.

“This year’s Marathon is shaping up to be an incredibly positive event,” says Marathon Chair Elizabeth Model. “We have an outstanding lineup of local cultural groups and artists to motivate runners along the new route and we’re very hopeful the word gets out to volunteers who think they are signed up to contact us again and ensure we have their information. As a volunteer run not-for-profit, we depend on our volunteers to make this community event a success.”

Due to an unfortunate glitch in the online registration system, those who signed up to volunteer between July 3 and September 3 were not properly registered and are encouraged to do so again now. Volunteers are still needed in areas of aid stations, course marshals, cultural miles, expo, finish line concert, gear check, guest services, information booth, package pick-up, race package stuffing, registration, refreshment stations and more.
