Crash in UBC parkade claims one life

THE University RCMP are investigating after a single vehicle collision inside a parkade resulted in the death of one man.

On Wednesday, January 17 at 9:32 a.m., the University RCMP received a report of a vehicle that had crashed through a barrier on the second floor of the Thunderbird Parkade and fallen down to the first.

Police found a portion of the concrete barrier was hanging precariously above the vertical black sedan. The vehicle appeared to contain a single occupant who had apparently suffered significant injuries. Efforts to extract the person from the vehicle could not be immediately made due to the danger created by the damaged structure.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services was able to secure the vehicle and safely extricate the sole occupant.

“Tragically, the man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Staff-Sgt. Kris Clark of the BC RCMP. “Fortunately, no one else was injured and the scene was made safe for first responders by fire and rescue personnel.”

The investigation in ongoing; however, it is too early to determine the causal factors in this crash, police said.
