ONTARIO’S Peel Regional Police as well as the lawyer representing former Liberal MP Raj Grewal have confirmed to the media that Grewal’s home was also the scene of a shooting recently.
The VOICE reported last Friday that Peel Regional Police in response to a disturbing trend of extortion attempts, primarily targeted towards members of the South Asian business community, had launched an Extortion Investigative Task Force (EITF).
Victims were contacted through a variety of social media platforms and demands for money were made under threats of violence, which occurred in some incidents. Nine incidents are currently being investigated.
The Toronto Star reported that Grewal’s lawyer told it that he could confirm that Grewal’s home is “one of numerous” examples of shootings “outside of the homes and businesses of prominent Brampton businesspeople and community leaders.”
The Star said that Peel Regional Police’s deputy chief had also confirmed that Grewal’s home was the scene of a shooting.
On Saturday, December 9, Peel Regional Police arrested Tanmanjot Gill, a 23-year-old man from Abbotsford, B.C., for discharging a gun and firing multiple rounds at a business near Rutherford Road South and Clark Boulevard in Brampton. Officers are looking for a second suspect.
Similar extortion tactics have been used on South Asian businessmen in B.C.
