SURREY’S Fraser Heights Secondary community is celebrating its 23rd year of supporting the Surrey Christmas Bureau, donating more than 100 hand-built wooden toys and contributing $1,450 through a long-standing, volunteer-led holiday project that brings together students, families, staff and local businesses.
The annual toy initiative is rooted in the school’s shop program, where students volunteer their time outside regular coursework to design and build toys for local children. There is no class credit — participation is driven by tradition, pride and a commitment to helping others. Local businesses continue to donate lumber and materials, making the project possible year after year.
“For 23 years, this has truly been a community project,” said shop teacher Martin Lim, who helps lead the initiative. “Our partners donate the lumber, materials and most of the supplies.  Many staff members devote hours of their own time to build these toys.  Other volunteers help to make this all come together.  It’s remarkable to see the care that goes into this work and how much it means to the community.”
New this year, the school introduced a wooden tree fundraiser for staff and the wider Fraser Heights community. For a $20 donation to the Surrey Christmas Bureau, supporters were gifted a handcrafted wooden tree. Proceeds from the trees, along with additional contributions, totaled $1,450.
Surrey Board of Education chair Gary Tymoschuk commended the initiative for its long-standing impact. “Twenty-three years of community giving is something to be incredibly proud of,” he said. “This project reflects the heart of Surrey — students applying their skills for a meaningful purpose, local businesses stepping up with support and families joining in. The board is grateful for the commitment shown by Fraser Heights Secondary and the difference they continue to make for families each holiday season.”
The Surrey Christmas Bureau provides toys and holiday support to low-income families across the city. Community-led initiatives like this help ensure children experience a joyful and memorable holiday season.
