THE BC RCMP said on Monday that it had notified the Independent Investigation Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Surrey which resulted in one man being taken to hospital with serious injuries.
According to BC RCMP and the IIO BC, on Sunday, June 18 shortly after 8 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle, a green Hyundai Elantra, and a potential indecent act in the 100 Avenue parking lot of Green Timbers Urban Forest.
Officers located the vehicle with a man and a woman inside, but it reportedly fled westbound on 100 Avenue. Officers followed and the suspect vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection 100 Avenue and 140 Street.
The male driver attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody after officers deployed a conducted energy weapon. He was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
Other people involved in the collision reported little to no injuries.
BC RCMP said that the IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident.
Surrey RCMP are conducting a concurrent investigation into the initial complaint and subsequent collision.
The IIO said that initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the events leading up to the collision, the collision itself, and how and when the man’s injuries occurred.
