VANCOUVER, BC – In front of the club’s second-largest home crowd for an MLS regular season match – 40,086 – Vancouver Whitecaps FC returned to BC Place with a thunderous 1-1 draw against nemesis Los Angeles FC.

Thanks to Thomas Müller’s nerves of steel from the spot, the Blue and White (10W-4D-3L, 34 points, +21 GD) remained ahead of LAFC in the Western Conference table via a greater goal difference, and with two games in hand over LAFC (10W-4D-5L, 34 points, +16 GD).

Five minutes in, Whitecaps FC’s starting XI switched on in the attacking third. Left back Tate Johnson laid off for oncoming Oliver Larraz, who slotted a through ball for Müller. The German legend put a short cross for right winger Jeevan Badwal – but the ball pinwheeled off bodies in front of LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

By the quarter-hour, the home side had the ball glued to their boots. Comfortable stretches of possession led striker Brian White to sting Lloris’s palms from outside the box.

On his next chance, White tapped in past Lloris – but a flag went up for offside to nullify the opener.

In the 37th minute, Bouanga took full advantage of a quick counter for a diagonal pass to Son Heung-Min, who spun away from a challenge. The Korean international cracked a 16-yard drive past Whitecaps FC ’keeper Yohei Takaoka for 1-0 to LAFC at the half.

After play resumed, Whitecaps FC centre back Mathías Laborda had a golden opportunity. His well-struck 15-yard volley looked spectacular until LAFC midfielder Mathieu Choinière stepped in to deflect the ball out of danger.

Another volley attempt – this time from Müller – whooshed an agonizing three feet from glory – the ball refused to bend below the crossbar.

The German kept grinding. On another rush, he was tripped up by defender Yevhen Cheberko for a penalty kick.

Müller coyly shuffled – both with his feet and eyes – to draw Lloris slightly to the far post before calmly slotting home in the opposite corner. Whitecaps FC were on the board, 1-1.

Immediately following the restart, White was unlucky not to nudge the ball over the line from in close, with Lloris scrambling back to cover.

Neither side was able to capitalize during a nervy five minutes of added time, keeping the ‘Caps ahead in the table.

Whitecaps FC now lace up for three consecutive matches versus Mexican clubs from Liga MX in the annual Leagues Cup.
