IIO BC: Officer-involved shooting in Surrey

THE Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) tweeted on Wednesday morning that it has been notified of an officer-involved shooting in Surrey.

Police said that on August 14, at approximately 4:17 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a call that there was a male chasing another male with a machete in an alley in the 10600-block of 135A Street. 

Police officers responded and located a man they believed matched the suspect’s description. During the course of the interaction with the man, police officers fired their service pistols striking the man. Emergency Health Services attended and the man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening gunshot injuries. No one else was injured during the incident. 

The scene was secured, and the IIO BC was notified and went to the scene. IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation into the police-involved shooting.  

Surrey RCMP Serious Crime investigators were on scene and will continue to investigate the initial complaint and are looking to speak with additional witnesses who have not already spoken to police.  Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
