THE Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the arrest of a woman by members of the RCMP in Chilliwack on November 23.
Information provided by police states that shortly after 2:30 a.m., officers responded to a call about an intoxicated woman at a bar on Gaetz Street.
Upon arrival, officers found the woman and attempted to speak with her. There was an interaction and officers arrested her, resulting in a serious injury.
(The BC RCMP said in a statement that staff from a restaurant called police to report that an impaired woman was refusing to take a cab and had entered her vehicle. Officers attended and located the vehicle running with the woman in the driver’s seat. The woman eventually exited the vehicle, but then tried to re-enter it. The officers attempted to stop her but the situation escalated and ultimately resulted in officers taking her into custody. Emergency Health Services transported her to hospital where it was determined that she had suffered a serious injury.)
The IIO was notified the same day and has commenced an investigation.
Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and if any force used by police was necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances.
The IIO is asking any person with relevant information of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
