THE PNE’s longest running concessionaire, Jimmy’s Lunch, will mark their 95th anniversary at the 2024 PNE Fair.
Today the stand is run by Jimmy’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren and still serves its iconic hamburgers piled high with fried onions. In 1999 in a province-wide media poll to mark the turn of the millennia, British Columbians voted the smell of Jimmy’s fried onions one of the ten most iconic memories of the 20th century in BC.
“The PNE has been our family’s summer tradition for generations,” says Jimmy’s Lunch operator Jim Parsons, grandson of the stand founder. “This stand has become a big part of British Columbians’ Fair experience; we have regulars that come year after year to have one of our burgers and reflect on special family memories at the PNE.”
95 years of Jimmy’s Lunch – Fun Facts:
– Each year at the Fair, Jimmy’s Lunch serves over 10 tonnes of fried onions on their iconic Jimmy’s Lunch burgers
– Jimmy’s Lunch has employed thousands of British Columbians including NHL great Brett Hull (who peeled onions as a teen for a summer prior to his NHL hockey fame!)
– A young Donald Sutherland once ate at Jimmy’s Lunch
– Vancouver Canuck Gino Odjick was a Jimmy’s Lunch patron
– In the 1950’s the Jimmy’s Lunch stand at the PNE was North America’s largest “restaurant under canvas” at 90’ by 90’
– One Labour Day in the mid-1950’s the Jimmy’s Lunch stand went through two tonnes of potatoes in a single day!
Fairgoers can visit the Jimmy’s Lunch stand for their amazing Jimmy’s Lunch burger and fries, a new menu item – the Jimmy’s Lunch Poutine Dog or simply to take in a special memorabilia display honouring the 95-year legacy of the famous stand.
