Man waving machete in Eagle Ridge Hospital arrested

PORT Moody Police say that on Tuesday, January 14 just after 8:30 p.m., they received a number of 9-1-1 calls from Eagle Ridge Hospital. Callers reported a man waving a machete in a threatening manner and causing a disturbance inside the hospital’s emergency room, triggering a ‘code silver’ at the facility.

Frontline officers attended the hospital and located the suspect outside of the hospital, conducting a high-risk arrest of the man (who was taken into custody without further incident). Mental health was determined to be a factor and the suspect – a Maple Ridge man in his 20’s – was subsequently apprehended under the Mental Health Act and brought to a psychiatric facility.

“Any witnesses who have yet to speak with us are encouraged to do so,” said Constable Sam Zacharias, adding that “the matter remains under investigation and we are in the process of recommending criminal charges to the B.C. Prosecution Service.”
