COQUITLAM RCMP on Thursday confirmed that a body located by the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is a 19-year-old Surrey man that went missing on Tuesday (July 17).
“Coquitlam RCMP and our Victim Services are doing their best to support the family. As you can imagine, the family is very upset,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.
The missing man’s body was found at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday in about 40 metres of water. The man was located near the spot where he was last seen about 100 metres from the shore of Buntzen Lake.
The Surrey man was in the lake with a group of friends who called police about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they noticed he was no longer in sight.
The BC Coroner’s Service is scheduling an autopsy but there is no indication of foul play.
“As our hot summer continues, we’d like to remind everyone to take precautions around our lakes and rivers,” said McLaughlin. Even a well-managed, popular place like Buntzen Lake has inherent risks. Exercising your best judgment, and using approved Personal Floatation Devices, could save a life.”
