New Westminster Police officers assaulted while arresting domestic assault suspect

ON Tuesday, November 23 at approximately 3:41 p.m., the New Westminster Police Department was called to a domestic assault incident in progress. By the time police arrived, the suspect had fled the scene.

Minutes later, police located the suspect in the 700-block of 6th Street and he fled from police. Police pursued the suspect on foot and a violent struggle ensued when they caught up with him. The suspect allegedly bit an officer in the arm and spat into another officer’s face.

The suspect, a 29-year-old New Westminster resident, was taken into custody for assault, assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm, and obstructing a police officer.

“It’s difficult to put my feelings into words knowing someone hurt my colleagues when they were just doing their job,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “This individual’s actions showed disregard for the safety of the victim and our members.”

The services of the Victim Assistance Unit were made available to the victim of the domestic assault.
