A silent vigil — No More Femicide — was held in Downtown Vancouver honouring 14 women who were killed by men in British Columbia in 2023.

The vigil was organized by Vancouver Rape Relief and participants held signs with women’s names, ages, and the date of their murder.

One sign was dedicated to 46-year-old Kulwant Kaur. Kulwant was found with stab wounds that ultimately proved fatal at her New Westminster home on October 13.

Kulwant Kaur’s husband, Balvir Singh, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to her death. New Westminster Provincial Court records show that in 2022, Singh was charged and convicted for uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm to Kaur.

Hilla Kerner, spokeswoman for Vancouver Rape Relief said: “Kulwant Kaur was killed by a man who had previous charges for domestic violence. This is yet another tragic case that shows that the Criminal Justice System must create effective methods to supervise and monitor men who are known to be violent so they cannot harm, let alone kill, women.”

A GoFundMe Page that was put up by Tegpal Sangha on behalf of Kulwant Kaur’s family stated: “Kulwant Kaur came to Canada in 2019 to give her son a better life and brighter future. On October 13th, she was taken from us in a domestic dispute. Kulwant passed away leaving behind her son. She was an amazing mother and a loving daughter. She was taken too soon at a young age of 46. She was a hardworking, kind, caring person and was looking to make a better life for her and her son.”
