OBITUARY: HARVARINDER (HARVEY) SINGH POWAR

OUR Father, Harvarinder (Harvey) Singh Powar, passed away on March 10, 2022, at Royal Columbian Hospital. His untimely passing occurred due to a workplace injury.

Harvey was born in Mithapur, Jalandhar, Punjab on February 8, 1950. He is the youngest of four brothers and leaves behind his wife, two sons and daughter, as well as his daughters-in-law and six grandchildren.

Immigrating to Canada in 1970 at the young age of 20, Harvey started his career in Stewart, B.C., at the Granduc Copper Mine. After graduating with his Red Seal Ticket in Heavy Duty Mechanics, he moved to Kitimat, B.C., and shortly after started work at Alcan Aluminum Smelter.

Harvey moved to Surrey in 1993 with his wife Neeru and their three children Vik, Neha, Rahul. He started his career with the Canadian Pacific Railway in November 1994 at their Port Coquitlam yard.

Harvey flourished with CP Rail becoming a leader and mentor to numerous apprentices. Harvey re-wrote and redesigned various processes and procedures that were shortly after mandated by CP Rail. Many of Harvey’s innovative ideas and designs became the new policy for CP Operations. Harvey was nominated and won the CP Rail CEO award for excellence in 2018. He became a legend at CP Rail and finished his career, working for over 27 years.

Harvey had a passion for football, his favourite team was the BC Lions. He loved gardening and made it his project, growing and harvesting many vegetables and fruits that he would love sharing with family and friends. In his younger years, he was an avid athlete, participating in Tae Kwon Do, badminton, volleyball, running, power-lifting, squash, tennis and field hockey. Harvey became captain of the field hockey team, participating in the annual BC Summer Games. In the end, the most important passion of Harvey’s was spending time with his wife Neeru, three children, two daughters-in-law and six grandchildren.

A funeral service is being held on Wednesday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at Five Rivers Funeral Home in Delta.  An Antim Ardass will follow at 12 p.m. at Gurdwara Brookside located at 8365 140 Street in Surrey.
