As the spring session of the legislature kicks off, it’s a moment to reflect on our shared aspirations for a brighter future in British Columbia. Regardless of where we live in this beautiful province, our hopes converge on common themes: affordable housing, accessible healthcare, quality education for our children, and safe communities. These aren’t just talking points; they’re the heartbeat of our government’s agenda.

In the face of global economic challenges and rising costs of living, our NDP government, under the leadership of Premier David Eby, remains steadfast in its commitment to the people of this province. Our focus is clear: delivering tangible results that directly improve the lives of British Columbians.

One of our paramount goals is addressing the housing crisis head-on. We understand the frustration of families struggling to find suitable homes in their communities. That’s why initiatives like BC Builds are crucial. Securing $2 billion in federal financing to bolster this program signifies a significant step forward in our efforts to provide middle-income families with the homes they deserve. Unlike the opposition’s proposals, which favor speculators and inflate housing prices, we’re dedicated to practical solutions that put people first.

With Budget 2024, we’re continuing our mission to alleviate everyday burdens for working families and small businesses. Our approach isn’t just about short-term fixes; it’s about addressing root causes to make life more affordable in the long run.

The Speech from the Throne outlines our multifaceted approach to these pressing issues. By delivering more homes, easing financial pressures, strengthening healthcare, and fostering a cleaner economy, we’re building a foundation for prosperity that benefits everyone—not just the privileged few.

But our work doesn’t stop there. We’re also taking proactive steps to protect our children and communities, whether it’s through legislation to safeguard schools from disruptive protests or holding social media giants accountable for their actions.

As we continue to tackle these challenges, it’s essential to acknowledge the progress we’ve already made. From transforming empty units into housing to record levels of rental home registrations, the results speak for themselves. However, we recognize that there’s still much to be done. With determination and dedication, we will keep pushing forward to create a better future for all British Columbians.

In closing, let me reiterate: your priorities are our priorities. Our NDP government is committed to working tirelessly on your behalf, ensuring that every individual and family in this province has the opportunity to thrive. Together, let’s build a stronger, fairer and more inclusive British Columbia.
