SAV DHALIWAL was re-elected as Councillor in BURNABY for a sixth term. Mike Hurley defeated incumbent Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan (Burnaby Citizens Association), but BCA candidates won seven of the eight seats on Council. Council candidate Baljinder K Narang came ninth, losing by just over 200 votes to the person who came eighth.
*KELLY CHAHAL (incumbent Councillor / Abbotsford First) won in ABBOTSFORD … where incumbent Mayor Henry Braun won again.
*JAG GILL, 23-year-old owner of Mission City Pizza, and KEN HERAR, well-known community activist, were elected Councillors in MISSION where Pam Alexis is the new mayor.
*KELOWNA: COLIN BASRAN re-elected Mayor … MOHINI SINGH re-elected Councillor:
Basran was elected Councillor in 2011 and in 2014, he was elected Mayor. He faced former mayor Sharon Shepherd in the mayoral race after Walter Gray decided to leave the mayor’s office after four terms and endorsed Basran who thrashed Shepherd by more than 6,000 votes (16,755 to 10,358 votes). Now he has won a second term as mayor with 56.95 per cent of the votes, beating Tom Dyas who got only 29.92 per cent of the votes.
Basran was born and raised in Kelowna. He graduated from KLO Secondary school after attending elementary and middle schools in the Rutland area. The Basrans were one of the very first South Asian families to settle in the Okanagan, arriving around 1907. He worked as a television journalist for CHBC News before going into business as a realtor.
Mohini Singh was first elected as councillor in 2011. Now she has won a third term.
She was a journalist for CHBC TV and CBC radio and covered issues in the valley for 22 years. She received the Order of B.C. in 2008. In 2009 she was named Kelowna’s Woman of the Year. She has volunteered at the Kelowna’s Women’s Shelter for many years.
*VERNON: AKBAL SINGH MUND, a prominent Vernon businessman, who was mayor, was elected Councillor. According to a Vernon blog this newspaper quoted back in 2014, he was an owner of the local Wendy’s franchise and was president of the Greater Vernon 2012 B.C. Winter Games, co-founder of Wendy’s Dreamlift Day, president of the North Okanagan Sports Society and president of the Vernon Soccer Association. He was named Vernon’s Good Citizen of the Year in 2012. Also, in Vernon, DALVIR KAUR NAHAL was elected councillor. She has been on the board for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital and is known for her fundraising.
*KAMLOOPS: ARJUN SINGH was re-elected councillor. He was born and raised in Kamloops. His parents, Dr Gur and Manju Singh, immigrated to Canada from India in the 1960s. He previously served on council from 2005-2008 and was reelected in 2011. He has an MA in Professional Communication from Royal Roads Unversity and a Certificate in Dialogue, Deliberation, and Public Engagement from Fielding Graduate University. Another South Asian, BILL SARAI, was also elected Councillor. He wrote on his Facebook: “I have lived in Kamloops proudly for nearly twenty-five years after marring my wife who was born and raised in Kamloops, raising my family here and volunteering in different roles throughout the community.”
*PRINCE RUPERT: GURVINDER RANDHAWA was re-elected councillor. On his Facebook page he wrote: “While owning and operating a small business, I dedicated my free time to advocating for diverse organizations such as the boards of Tourism Prince Rupert and Northwest Community College (now Coast Mountain College). I also contribute leadership to the Recreation Commission, North Coast Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society and the Small Business Advisory Committee. As well, I coach minor soccer.” Last year, this newspaper wrote: “Randhawa is an owner and operator of Skeena Taxi Ltd and a driving instructor with Skeena Driving School. Previously, Randhawa was an Auditor with Accountant General in Punjab, India.”
*NDP MLA Leonard Krog’s election as Mayor of Nanaimo means that he will give up his MLA seat, resulting in a provincial byelection.
