PRIME Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday said: “Today, Sikh communities in Canada and around the world celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. A celebration of freedom, selflessness, and justice, this festival honours the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib, and his release from prison.

“In a fast-changing, more uncertain world, Bandi Chhor Divas brings families together to celebrate the values of service, faith, and generosity. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all those celebrating a joyous time and a happy Bandi Chhor Divas.”

CONSERVATIVE Party Leader Pierre Poilievre said: “On Bandi Chhor Divas, Sikhs in Canada and around the world honour the remarkable courage of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s fight for freedom, justice and human rights.

“Millions will celebrate as Gurduaras and homes are lit up with Diyas and candles to commemorate his release from imprisonment, along with his unwavering commitment to freeing fifty-two others.

“Generations later, the same spirit of freedom and faith continues to inspire Sikhs here in Canada, who continue to selflessly offer charity and host Langars for their communities.
