SUNDAY, August 16, hundreds of families, community members and cultural leaders gathered at Beckwith Park for the 2026 Punjabi Mela and Indian Independence Day Celebration, highlighting the growing contribution of Greater Victoria’s Punjabi community and its commitment to preserving culture across generations, hosted by the Punjabi Cultural Community Association of Victoria.
The afternoon featured Punjabi music, cultural performances, speeches, community recognition and dancing, bringing together people of all ages to celebrate and share Punjabi culture.
Lana Popham, MLA for Saanich South, and Diana Gibson, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, joined community members at the celebration, recognizing the important role the Punjabi community plays in Greater Victoria’s cultural fabric.
Beyond the festivities, the event also highlighted the ongoing work of the Victoria Dian Punjabana Group, a community initiative led by Parminder and Jagir S. Virk that focuses on strengthening connections among Punjabi families, youth and seniors.
The group was established as a youth- and family-focused space where neighbours can come together, discuss issues affecting their community and find opportunities to volunteer and give back. Its work includes raising awareness about homelessness, organizing food drives and charitable initiatives, supporting seniors and helping younger generations stay connected to Punjabi culture and traditions.
A key part of the group’s work is creating opportunities for intergenerational connection. Regular gatherings provide space for families to cook and socialize together, participate in educational discussions, enjoy music and entertainment, and take part in Kavi Darbar evenings where participants share poetry and ideas.
That focus on community connection was reflected throughout this year’s Punjabi Mela.
The annual celebration has become an important cultural gathering in Greater Victoria, bringing Punjabi traditions into a public space and inviting the broader community to participate. Combining the Mela with an Independence Day celebration also provided an opportunity to remember freedom fighters while celebrating Punjabi heritage, music and culture.
For the Victoria Dian Punjabana Group and the Punjabi Cultural Community Association of Victoria, events like the Mela are about more than celebrating culture for one afternoon. They help ensure younger generations have opportunities to learn about their heritage, while creating spaces where seniors, families and neighbours can build relationships and remain connected.
With community members gathering around food, music and performances at Beckwith Park, the 2026 Punjabi Mela once again demonstrated the importance of culture as a way to bring people together and strengthen the community.
