Richmond RCMP sound the alarm on rising distraction theft scams

RICHMOND RCMP are advising the public following a series of reported distraction theft incidents occurring between September and November.

In each case, suspects used various distraction techniques to target victims, often resulting in stolen jewelry. The incidents occurred in a range of public and residential locations across the city.

Between late September and late November in Richmond, multiple distraction thefts and jewelry swap scams occurred. Suspects, often in SUVs or sedans targeted mostly elderly victims (and one youth) using ruses like hugs, fake jewelry trades, or emotional stories. Incidents happened on major roads and residential areas, with necklaces and rings being stolen in several cases, police said.

While these incidents share similar characteristics, investigators do not currently have evidence confirming they are connected. Richmond RCMP are reviewing video footage and pursuing all investigative leads.

“These incidents can happen very quickly, often before the victim even realizes what has occurred,” said Constable Frank Bryson of Richmond RCMP on Thursday. “We want to remind the public to remain aware of their surroundings and to be cautious if approached unexpectedly. If something feels off, trust your instincts and contact police right away.”
