Richmond RCMP warn public following arrest of South Asian suspect impersonating police officer

RICHMOND RCMP are warning the public following the arrest of a suspect involved in alleged police impersonation.

On Sunday, May 18, shortly after 1 p.m., Richmond RCMP received a report of a suspicious circumstance where a man reported being pulled over by a Ford Mustang equipped with red and blue police lights. The complainant said the driver of the Mustang exited his vehicle wearing a police badge lanyard and asked to see the complainant’s driver’s licence. The complainant said he suspected that the man was not a police officer and so drove away and reported the incident to police from a safe location.

The suspect later called 9-1-1 and alleged he had been following a driver who was possibly impaired. Richmond RCMP frontline officers located and arrested the suspect for impersonating a police officer.

The suspect is described as:

  • South Asian male;
  • 39 years;
  • 5 ft 8 in to 5 ft 10 in;
  • Medium build;
  • Salt and pepper goatee.

The suspect was wearing dark grey clothing with a dark colour satchel bag and police badge lanyard.

The suspect vehicle is described as a grey Ford Mustang. The complainant was driving a beige Dodge Grand Caravan with Ontario licence plates.

“To date we have not received any similar reports involving this vehicle or suspect but are issuing this public warning to identify other potential victims and to prevent any further victimization,” said Inspector Mike Roberts, Officer-in-Charge of Frontline Operations.

Additionally, Richmond RCMP are seeking witnesses or dash cam footage of anyone who may have been in the area of No 2 Road between Westminster Highway and Francis Road on May 18 between 12:45 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Richmond RCMP frontline has conduct of this active and ongoing investigation.
