Rustad slams Eby and NDP as Premier terminates Michael Bryant’s contract

B.C. Conservative Leader John Rustad on Tuesday ripped into Premier David Eby as he announced the termination of the controversial contract with Downtown Eastside consultant Michael Bryant, the former CEO of Legal Aid B.C.

Trevor Halford, B.C. Conservative MLA for Surrey-White Rock, last week demanded answers from Eby and the Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction after the Official Opposition obtained Bryant’s full Downtown Eastside contract, revealing a deal worth up to $325,000, significantly more than what was publicly disclosed earlier.

Rustad said in a video posted on X: “Michael Bryant is somebody that David Eby personally hired — a personal friend of his — to do some work for him three months ago and hid the contract and now that the contract’s been made public, he is ashamed and he has decided to fire Michael Bryant.

“We look at that as a victory on behalf of people in British Columbia. But what does that say about David Eby and his government? What does that say about their respect for taxpayers, their respect for the people in this province for him to just hire somebody — tried to hide it and as soon as they got found out, he goes and fires the person? It just goes to show what David Eby is really all about and the fact that he is not respecting people in this province.”

Rustad mentioned certain bills that he said the NDP had introduced to force their agenda through the legislature. He added: “Which means that as these things go through, you, as the public, will not get an opportunity to hear about scrutiny, You’re not gonna be able to see what it is they are going to do. They’re gonna be able to pick and choose winners and losers for moving forward projects, overriding whatever legislation they need in order to move these things forward.

“It’s a disgusting way quite frankly to run this province . It is not democratic. It is not what we should be seeing in British Columbia and, as the Conservative Party of British Columbia, we are going to continue to push back, we are gonna  continue to fight for what is right in this province  and we’re gonna make sure that he cannot be so sneaky about these things that he’s doing. We’re gonna make sure that this province has full transparency and we’re gonna hold the NDP and David Eby to account.”
