Saskatchewan cab driver Devinder Singh, 30, shot dead

DEVINDER Singh, 30, a cab driver was shot and killed on Friday, March 13 in North Battleford  in west-central Saskatchewan.

The Times of India reported that his cousin in India’s Punjab state told the media that according to the victim’s wife in Canada, Devinder Singh received a call from a woman at a motel requesting a ride. He was waiting outside the motel when a woman rushed out. A man chasing her fired at her, but the bullet hit the cab driver instead.

The newspaper said that Devinder Singh was from Daulatpura Neewan village in Punjab’s Moga district and had moved to Canada nearly four years ago to join his wife. He worked as a driver with a taxi company, Crown Cab, and also ran a cafe with his wife. The couple had married about six years ago and had no children.
Police said that on March 13, at approximately 7:45 a.m., Battlefords RCMP in Saskatchewan received a report of an injured male in a business parking lot off the Highway 16 Bypass in North Battleford. Officers immediately responded and located the male, who was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. The male was identified as a 30-year-old from North Battleford and his family was been notified. As the male’s death was considered suspicious, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit took charge of the case.

On Saturday, March 14, the RCMP announced that the Homicide Investigation Unit had charged two adult males in relation to the male’s death at the business.

Further investigation has determined that one of the males assaulted and pointed a firearm at another individual in the business, and the two adult males confined the individual to a room at the business. The victim was later transported to hospital for injuries described as non-life threatening in nature.

Kojac Adams, a 19-year-old male from North Battleford, is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon,  and pointing a firearm.

Garren Baptiste, a 19-year-old male from North Battleford, is charged with one count each of manslaughter, and forcible confinement.

Local media reported that family and supporters turned out in high numbers at North Battleford provincial court on Monday, March 16 to show their support. According to one media report, the incident has created fear among drivers and within the cab company. Some drivers have quit their jobs.
