THE Ministry of Health is announcing an $800,000 investment for the SHINE program, a collaborative initiative led by the Seniors Services Society of BC. Working with partner agencies in 12 communities in BC, SHINE helps preserve housing and prevent seniors from becoming homeless by helping them navigate essential housing, health, income, and support services they need to live independently.
The announcement was made by Jennifer Whiteside, MLA New Westminster / Coquitlam at the Senior Services Society’s annual Walk of Ages event on Sunday, June 14 at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster.
“We are deeply grateful to the province for recognizing the importance of SHINE, which last year provided 7,303 information and referral interactions, housing navigation assistance, and support services to low-income seniors across BC,” said Alison Silgardo, CEO of the Seniors Services Society of BC. “With more older adults finding themselves homeless for the first time as seniors, it’s vital that we reconnect them to permanent housing and the support they need to thrive.”
“SHINE is an invaluable resource for low-income seniors in B.C. It connects them to the support they need and deserve, particularly those experiencing housing precarity,” said Jennifer Whiteside, MLA for New Westminster-Coquitlam.
